2020 in review: Back in the saddle again

By Adam Ewing | shawneestandard@gmail.com

What a year it was.

2020 proved it was time to hedge my bets and take a chance on myself.

In 2019, I walked away from a secure gig as a ‘newspaper guy’ to help out a rural school district in need of an English teacher. It was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. However, that did not end as I expected…a story for another day.

After sitting in quarantine for the first half of 2020, I simply needed to get out of the house.

It started with going for walks with my new DSLR. Then football season rolled around.

Two years ago, over a two-week stretch, I spearheaded a three-volume Fall sports preview for the local fishwrap. I believe at that time we covered 11 high schools and Oklahoma’s collegiate programs. To this day, it ranks as one of my greatest accomplishments.

I realized I needed to chase that dragon once again, so I reached out to the area football coaches.

Some responded, some didn’t.

As we rolled into basketball season I tried to increase the coverage area. Again, some responded, some didn’t.

To the coaches that answered my weekly calls and texts, thank you. Each one of you helped me get my footing and hit the ground running.

To the athletes who put in maximum effort during practice and on game day, you make my job easy. Thank you for reaching out and requesting my presence at games. That makes the long hours worth it.

Thank you to all the parents who purchase and continue to purchase photos of their athletes.

As this train continues to roll on down the tracks, I don’t quite know where we’re going, but I do know I won’t stop until I’m satisfied with where we’re at.

Enjoy my favorite photos from 2020.
