ATU’s Jonathon Arrieta and Hayes Cox named GAC Player and Pitcher of the Week

RUSSELLVILLE, AR – The Great American Conference announced its weekly awards for baseball on Tuesday and Arkansas Tech’s Jonathon Arrieta and Hayes Cox were named the league’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively.

Arrieta, a senior native of El Paso, Texas, earned Co-Player of the Week honors after he had a great weekend at the plate for the Wonder Boys. With multiple hits in each of the three games, Arrieta turned in a batting average of .667. Two of his six hits left the yard as he hit two homers on the weekend, helping him record a 1.333 slugging percentage.

Arrieta would also score four runs and drive in four runs. Aided by a pair of walks, Arrieta’s on-base percentage was .727.

Cox, a junior native of Fayetteville, earned his second win of the season as he picked up a complete game victory over the weekend against Ouachita in non-conference action.

Pitching 7.0 innings against the Tigers, Cox’s lone blemish was a solo home run surrendered in the sixth. Outside of that, he allowed only three more hits (all singles), walked none and struck out five.

For his career against Ouachita, Cox is now 4-0 with an ERA of 0.33. In 27.0 innings pitched against the Tigers he has racked up 21 strikeouts and issued just two walks. Of the 14 scattered hits, only two have gone for extra bases.
