GRAND JUNCTION, CO – The Oklahoma Baptist swimming and diving team’s earned six top-three finishes and two new NCAA qualifying marks in the program’s final Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference meet Thursday.
William Newman placed third in the 200-yard IM with a time of 1:52.03. Newman earned an NCAA ‘B’ cut, needing a time of 1:52.49 to qualify. Estevao Hornos placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.05 He was 0.04 seconds away from the first-place swimmer, Ben Sampson of Colorado Mesa. The men’s 200-yard medley relay consisting of Ian Wiley, Tristan Villa, Hornos and Newman placed third with a time of 1:31.46.
Megan Gallagher took second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.78. As a result, Gallagher received an NCAA ‘B’ cut. The women’s 200-yard medley relay team consisting of Camila Alduenda, Anna Tindall, Jamie Edwards and Julie Day placed second with a time of 1:46.95. Gallagher, Alduenda, Edwards and Day placed second in the 200-yard freestyle posting a time of 1:34.93.
Jordan Atkins placed fifth in the four meter dive with a score of 193.65. Colorado Mesa’s Chandler Livingston won the even with a score of 493.60.
Both Bison teams finished day one in third place, with the men scoring 146 and the women tallying 128.5.
The RMAC Championships continue on Thursday. Day two events include the 100-yard fly, 400-yard IM, 200-yard freestyle, one meter diving, and the 400-yard medley relay.
In November 2020, OBU announced it was eliminating several athletic programs after the 2020-2021 academic year. Other programs eliminated were men’s golf, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s tennis and women’s lacrosse.
