WEATHERFORD – The Southwestern Oklahoma State University soccer team opened the 2021 season in style, holding East Central scoreless and posting a 1-0 victory Thursday afternoon.
Each team had five shot attempts in the first half and played a balanced first 45 minutes, with ECU getting the advantage with two shots on goal, both of which were stopped by SWOSU goalkeeper Ashley Hughes. Those would be the only on-goal attempts for the Tigers in the match, while the Bulldogs got going with 11 shot attempts in the second half.
The lone scoring play of the game took place early in the second half, with Briana Benitez finding Claire Torry for the first goal of the season and the deciding goal of the match.
Benitez led the Dawgs with five shot attempts and one on goal in the match while Brenna McGuirk fired off four shot attempts and the duo helped SWOSU to a 16-6 shot advantage.
Thursday’s match was a non-conference contest for each team and now the Bulldogs take a 1-0 record into their Great American Conference home opener on Sunday against Northwestern Oklahoma State. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m.
