Tiger wrestling picks up first win of 2021, heads to Oklahoma for two duals

MEMPHIS, TN – Ouachita Baptist wrestling earned victories at eight weights Wednesday night in a 39-9 victory over Kentucky Wesleyan at Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

Sophomore Johnny Green’s 59-second pin put the finishing touches on the Tigers’ first win of the season.

Freshman Evan Kennedy got Ouachita on the board with a narrow 11-10 victory at 133 over KWC’s Andrew Parker. Kennedy scored the last five points of the bout, using two takedowns and an escape to erase a four-point deficit.

At 149, freshman Jaylon Otero won by major decision over the Panthers’ Trevor South, racking up three takedowns in a 12-0 match. Freshman Jackson Carter won by tech fall, 20-4 over Thomas Karlo at 165 on the strength of a takedown and a pair of near falls early in the match.

Freshman Ryan Cochran won by 3-1 decision over Ethan Rogers at 197. Green capped the dual with a pin of KWC’s Brennan McElroy in 59 seconds. 

Freshman Chase Howerton (157), freshman William Martin (174) and sophomore Rey Reyes (184) all won by forfeit at their respective weights.

The Tigers are back in action Friday at Central Oklahoma, taking on the host Bronchos and Emmanuel College.

THE RUNDOWN

Ouachita Baptist wrestling hits the road Friday to complete a stretch of three dual matches in three days, taking on Emmanuel and No. 3 Central Oklahoma at Hamilton Field House in Edmond, Oklahoma.

The Tigers take on Emmanuel at 2 p.m., followed by a bout with UCO. Central Oklahoma has announced that no fans will be permitted at its home athletic events, but the matches will be streamed for free on the MIAA Network. Tiger fans can also find a live stream on the team’s Facebook page.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION

Friday’s duals will be the first action of the year for the host Bronchos, who figure to feature as many as seven top-12 wrestlers in their starting lineup. Highlighting the UCO lineup is Heath Gray, the top-ranked wrestler at 184 in Division II.

Emmanuel enters Friday’s action 0-5 on the season. The Lions’ most recent dual match was their closest of the season, a 28-27 loss to Queens University Charlotte. Prior to that match, Emmanuel had been outscored 168-28 in its first four duals.
